Parking in the heart of Durham city

Prince Bishops Place Car Park is located right in the heart of Durham City and is the closest car park to the unmissable UNESCO World Heritage Site – Durham Cathedral and Castle. The car park has 400 spaces, including 22 accessible parking bays located on Level 1, and is situated directly beneath Prince Bishops Place – the number one retail destination in Durham City.

In recognition of its exceptionally high standards, Prince Bishops Place, Durham Car Park received the first European Parking Award in the region. It has also been awarded the Park Mark Award since being open, for offering safe and secure parking to visitors of Durham City.

With ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) and contactless payment technology available, parking in Prince Bishops Place, Durham Car Park could not be easier – you’ll just need to remember your registration number.

Here’s how the ANPR works:

  • Slowly drive up to the barrier (height restriction is 6 feet 8 inches)
  • Our cameras will capture your registration number and the barrier will raise
  • Shop, enjoy your visit and remember your registration number
  • When ready to leave you can either make payment at the pay station by entering your registration number or contactless via the TRUST parking app
  • Return to your vehicle and proceed to the exit barrier
  • Drive slowly up to the barrier and our cameras will check your number plate, validate your payment and the barrier will raise

Using the TRUST Parking App:

TRUST is a new App based system to pay for your parking quickly via your smartphone to avoid the queues at the pay station. We recommended that you download the app and set up your Glide account before your visit.

  • To create a TRUST account simply download the TRUST Parking app from Google Play or the App Store
  • Either enter your registration number and select Pay Now or create an account – follow the prompts from Glide
  • You’ll need to make payment once you are ready to leave, then once payment has been made, there is a ten minute ‘grace period’ to leave the car park

Various Ways to Pay

We offer a range of payment methods to suit everyone. It’s never been easier to pay for car parking at Prince Bishops Place.

You can now pay for your parking via:

  • Contactless or chip and pin card
  • Mobile (Apple Pay or Google Pay)

  • Virtual Paystation
  • Cash (Notes & Coins)

Closing of Levels 4, 5, 6 and 7

As part of our continued commitment towards energy efficiency, Level 4, 5, 6 & 7 of our car park will be closed at 6pm and will re-open in the morning as required. It’s estimated that this initiative will contribute an 11-ton saving on our annual CO2 emissions.

If you envisage your stay will be after 6pm, please park on the lower levels.

If you require access to your vehicle during these times, please press the help point on the pay machines for assistance or call us on 0191 375 0416.

Accessible Parking

There are 22 accessible bays located on Level 1 of our car park. Also situated on Level 1 is the Durham Shopmobility Scheme, adjacent to the pay station. Those with limited mobility can hire motorised scooters, manual wheelchairs, and power-assisted wheelchairs here, to assist in accessibility to Durham’s shopping and leisure facilities. Find out more here.

EV Charging & Parking – Prices & Tariffs

We have six Pod-Point vehicle charging bays on Level 1. Designed to be user-friendly, our charging points allow eco-minded shoppers to plug their vehicles in to recharge, leaving them free to shop. The charging points have per hour tariffs. Please note,  you will be billed for the duration your car is plugged in and not for the duration it is consuming energy.

The charging points within Prince Bishops Place Car Park operate on a Kwh rate of £0.40p per Kwh. You will be charged based on the consumption of energy during your charge period. Car parking tariffs also apply during you stay.

If you’re not already registered with Pod Point, customers are first required to download the Pod Point App from the App Store or Google Play and complete the registration process.

Once registered:

  • Find an available EV charging point
  • Open the Pod Point App
  • Locate where your car is parked
  • Plug-in and charge

When you’ve finished shopping and you’re ready to leave the Prince Bishops Car Park. Simply pay for parking in the usual way at the nearest Pay Station or via the TRUST App. Un-plug your vehicle and drive to the exit.
