Durham Announces First-Ever Seven Stories Pop-Up on World Book Day

World Book Day is always a special occasion, but this year, the city of Durham has even more reason to celebrate. In an exciting first, Durham will host the country’s inaugural pop-up ‘Two Tales’ from Seven Stories, the National Centre for Children’s Books. This transformative space will open to the heart of Durham’s high street this Spring, celebrating books, promoting wellbeing and serving as a cultural hub where visitors can appreciate the centre’s world-renowned collection.

Seven Stories visitor centre is based in Newcastle upon Tyne and will be celebrating its 20-year anniversary this year. As the National Centre for Children’s Books it believes every book is an open door to adventure, now they’re bringing that adventure to the heart of Durham with ‘Two Tales’: a mini Seven Stories set over two floors. This initiative aligns with Seven Stories’ mission to celebrate and promote children’s literature across the UK.

The ‘Two Tales’ pop-up will be located in Unit 4 (former FatFace Store) of Prince Bishops Place Shopping Centre, a key retail and cultural hub in Durham. James Taylor, Regional Director of Citrus Group, the owners of the centre, welcomed the initiative:

“We’ve been working for some time supporting Seven Stories to bring this amazing opportunity to the city. We are absolutely thrilled with the support given from a wide range of stakeholders – this is a truly exciting addition to the high street and one that places children’s literature at its heart in a fun, engaging and inspirational facility that will appeal to a wide range of visitors.”

Wendy Elliott, CEO of Seven Stories and a global advocate for the benefits of reading, shared her enthusiasm:

“We’re extremely excited to open this accessible and immersive space where everyone can share in our passion for children’s books and the people who create them. I’d like to thank all of the partners who have supported us in making this venture a reality.”

Visitors to the Seven Stories pop-up can look forward to a dynamic environment where books can be explored, discussed and purchased. In addition to an immersive exhibition space, there will be interactive storytelling sessions, and educational workshops designed to engage young minds and support literacy development.

The announcement was made at two local schools, St Oswald’s and St Godric’s, with the support of award-winning author and County Durham native, Richard O’Neill MBE. Known for his dynamic storytelling and dedication to promoting literacy, O’Neill emphasised the importance of innovative approaches to bringing books and stories into children’s lives.

“Being born and raised in this area, it’s especially meaningful to see such an incredible facility open for the people of County Durham to enjoy.”

Councillor Amanda Hopgood, Leader of Durham County Council, who championed the collaboration:

“This is a fantastic example of Durham’s ambition and the positive partnerships between the council, businesses, and charities.”

Adam Goldwater, Collections and Exhibitions Director at Seven Stories, highlighted the shift in the retail landscape and the cultural impact of the new venture:

“As big retailers move out, we’re stepping in with our one-of-a-kind collection. This space will take visitors on an “adventure by book,” allowing them to get up close with original manuscripts and illustrations from children’s books that have shaped the imagination and creativity of generations.”

Two Tales’ pop-up will officially open to the public later this Spring, with further details to be announced in the coming weeks.
